About Beta Alanine:
Beta Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that is produced naturally in the body. It is also present in food sources such as meat, fish and poultry. It has been researched as a sports nutrition ingredient for boosting athletic performance – in particular high intensity anaerobic performance.
The main cause of fatigue setting in during high intensity exercise such as CrossFit is the accumulation of lactic acid in your muscles. Carnosine which is stored in skeletal muscles serves as a buffer against the acid, reducing the acidity. Regulating this acid build-up in muscles improves the ability to exercise, delays muscle tiredness and increases endurance.
Beta Alanine is used in the body together with the amino acid Histidine to produce Carnosine. As a precursor of Carnosine, the availability of Beta Alanine is a rate limiting factor to Carnosine synthesis. This is where supplementation comes in, helping to elevate muscle Carnosine content. This could help you to increase exercise volume and enhance the quality of your training, which in turn can lead to increases in lean body mass. Carnosine has also been shown to act as an antioxidant – neutralising free radicals and reducing oxidative stress.
