What Does WOD Stand For?
The concept of CrossFit involves performing continually varied functional movements at high intensity. It’s competitive, varied, progressive and fun, great for strength-building, conditioning and overall fitness.
If you are interested in getting on board with the CrossFit craze, then it is important to understand what a WOD is. (Here at WOD Powders we’re clearly familiar with the term 😊), so let’s explain…
WOD simply means ‘workout of the day’ – this is the term that is commonly used to describe the workout portion of a CrossFit class, they are the set of suggested exercises. WOD performances are generally timed/scored/ranked to encourage competition and to track individual progress. The routines change daily and are structured with movements put together to test components of physical fitness. They incorporate lots of different exercise techniques including HIIT training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, gymnastics, powerlifting, kettlebell, strongman and body weight exercises (calisthenics). CrossFit aims to improve cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.
WODs will include movements that challenge different skills and muscle groups. There are so many different movements that can be written into the programme of WODs with the potential for thousands of different combinations. If you like variation in your exercise plans, then CrossFit will almost certainly tick the box.
Some common CrossFit WOD movements you might see are:
Push-ups, Pull-ups, Squats, Burpees, Plank hold, Rowing, Running, Box Jumps, Deadlifts, Cleans, Snatches, Sit-ups, Wall balls, Biking, Lunges, Overhead press, Rope Climbs… the list goes on.
Each WOD also has a goal, for example it could be to lift as heavy as possible, move as fast as possible, complete as many reps as possible, or simply just to complete the work. Movements in WODs can be scaled down to accommodate the different fitness levels of individuals in the box (Box is simply another term for the CrossFit gym space).
WODs take on different formats, so there may be a few other CrossFit terms it is useful to know…
AMRAP – This acronym stands for ‘As many rounds as possible’, or sometimes ‘As many reps as possible’. The challenge is to see how many times athletes can complete each combination of movements within the allotted time frame.
EMOM – Another acronym, meaning ‘Every minute on the minute’. These workouts challenge you to complete the prescribed reps within a minute. You then have to repeat the same reps starting at the beginning of the next minute, and the next and so on, until the end of the allocated time.
RFT – This is common in competitions and stands for ‘Rounds for time’ and simply challenges athletes to complete the prescribed movements as fast as possible.
